Food, glorious food

A bunch of food related thoughts, today, readers (so, what else is new?).

First, last night MAH was watching a show on the Food Network about ice cream while I was on the computer. They were mentioning a company that would make any flavor of ice cream you want (for a price). I just want some licorice ice cream. We used to get it at a place up in Canada in summer time. Anyone ever heard of this? What bizarre flavor of ice cream are you looking for?

I just finished a really yummy (actually) microwave pad thai. I think I will stock up on this at Wegman's and eat it every day. Ok, maybe not every day. I have to go out and finish making the salad that is supposed to accompany it for lunch. We're back to getting lettuce again from the farm and we have more tomatoes than we know what to do with. (Sorry, OSG, I hope you're having more luck growing them this year.) I picked kohlrabi this time instead of yet more beets. Still have two bunches in the fridge.

Last, but not least, here's a snippet from one of the blogs I follow, The Karmic Kitchen. I found because of their coverage of Top Chef, but it's worth a read if you're interested in food. From today's post, "I dunk, therefore I am":

I went to my favorite coffee spot this morning to have a latte, and sit and read the paper in peace. Every now and again, I casually dunked the cookie I had purchased into my latte. As I dunked, I noticed a woman glaring at me, her eyebrow raising each time my cookie hit the coffee, and I began to wonder if I was committing some heinous social faux pas. Everyone dunks don’t they? Don't they?!?!?
Personally, I am not a dunker. But I'm not opposed to it. They're taking a poll over the blog and so far 75% of the responders are dunkers and 25% want to but are afraid too. No one has yet admitted to never wanting to dunk.

I, of course, have never, ever wanted to dunk. I hate both coffee and milk, so there's nothing really that would make sense to dunk a cookie in. And besides, who wants a soggy cookie?

I gave up on tomatoes! Can't get them to grow in the Hyattsville soil. We planted many sunflowers this year and have been enjoying the giant blooms for several weeks now. The baby loved to touch them. We've even got some dark purple ones! Easiest things to grow as long as you've plant them in total sun. Even the low rain totals here in the Maryland burbs haven't slowed them down. -OSG
